The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has pointed out some major flaws in the petition aimed at recalling Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central Senatorial District. This petition, put forward by a group called Concerned Kogi Youth and Women, came with six bags full of documents that included signatures from more than half of the 474,554 registered voters in the district's five local government areas.
After reviewing the petition, INEC found that it was missing crucial contact details for the petitioners, such as their addresses, phone numbers, and email addresses. Sam Olumekun, who serves as INEC's National Commissioner and Chairman of Information and Voter Education, stressed that these details are essential for the verification process. He mentioned, "Once the petition meets the submission requirements outlined in our regulations, the Commission will begin verifying the signatures in each polling unit through a transparent process that is limited to the registered voters who signed the petition."
Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan, who found herself suspended from the Senate on March 6 due to alleged misconduct after a clash with Senate President Godswill Akpabio, has voiced her concerns about how INEC is managing the recall process. She believes the petition should have been thrown out right away because of its flaws and has called out the commission for showing bias.
This situation has ignited conversations about the necessary procedures for recalling elected officials and highlights the need to stick to established guidelines to maintain the integrity of our electoral process.
