In a major political move, the Rivers State emergency Government has decided to suspend all political office holders who were appointed by the now-suspended Governor Siminalayi Fubara. This decision, which takes effect on Wednesday, March 26, 2025, comes on the heels of a recent state of emergency declared in the oil-rich region.

The suspension affects a broad array of officials, including:

- Secretary to the State Government (SSG)

- Chief of Staff

- Commissioners

- Board chairpersons and members

- Officials in various agencies, commissions, institutions, and parastatals

- Special Advisers, Special Assistants, and Senior Special Assistants

Suspended Officials have been instructed to pass their responsibilities over to the permanent secretaries in their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs). If there isn’t a permanent secretary available, the most senior director or head of administration will take on those duties.

The suspension of political appointees follows President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's announcement of a state of emergency in Rivers State on March 18, 2025. This unprecedented action resulted in the suspension of Governor Fubara, Deputy Governor Ngozi Odu, and all elected members of the Rivers State House of Assembly for an initial six-month period. This decision was driven by rising political tensions and worries about pipeline vandalism in the area.

In light of the recent emergency, President Tinubu appointed former Vice-Admiral Ibok-Ete Ibas (Retd.) as the sole administrator of Rivers State. Vice-Admiral Ibas stepped into his new role last week and has already begun implementing significant measures to restore stability in the state's governance, including the recent suspension of political appointees.

This announcement was made via an official statement titled "The Rivers State Government Announces the Suspension of Political Office Holders and Appointees in Rivers State," which was signed by the Chief of Staff to the Administrator. The statement indicates that the suspension is effective immediately and details the process for handing over responsibilities.

This significant suspension represents a crucial turning point in the political scene of Rivers State. The intention behind this action is to tackle administrative issues and bring back some order amid the state of emergency. People living in the area, along with various stakeholders, are closely watching how things unfold, with hopes for a solution that will bring stability and progress to the region.

As things continue to evolve, residents are urged to stay updated and participate in meaningful conversations about the future of Rivers State.
