The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is facing a deepening internal crisis, with a Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Magistrate Court ordering an investigation into allegations of forgery involving the party's primary election guidelines, according to Champions News.
The court's directive was issued in response to a petition filed by PDP chieftain Mike Iheanaetu, who alleged that documents presented in legal proceedings were falsified. The implicated officials, including National Vice Chairman (South-East) Ali Odefa and factional National Secretary Chief Sunday Ude-Okoye, have been questioned by the police.
The crisis has also extended to the South-South region, where the Zonal Executive Committee has suspended its Zonal Secretary, Chief Felix Omemu, for one month. The suspension follows accusations of misconduct and unauthorized public statements.
Meanwhile, a foundation member of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Mr. Osita Okechukwu, has attributed the recent wave of defections from the PDP to the APC to a trust deficit within the PDP leadership. Okechukwu noted that the PDP's leadership had breached its own rotation convention, leading to a loss of trust among its members.
The APC chieftain also criticized Senator Aminu Tambuwal's statement that "no one with conscience will join the APC." Okechukwu argued that Tambuwal's comment was hypocritical, given his own role in breaching the PDP's rotation convention.
The crisis within the PDP is likely to have significant implications for the party's chances in the 2027 presidential election. As the party struggles to resolve its internal conflicts, it remains to be seen whether it can regain the trust of its members and the Nigerian electorate.
