The embattled National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Senator Samuel Anyanwu, has shed light on the underlying reasons behind the intense pressure from certain party leaders to vacate his position. In an exclusive interview with Vanguard, Anyanwu attributed the move to his unwavering commitment to upholding the rule of law, due process, and his long-standing personal relationship with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Chief Nyesom Wike.
Anyanwu revealed that some party leaders from his zone, the South East, perceive him as an obstacle to their political ambitions, which include taking control of the party structure. He emphasized that his election as National Secretary was legitimate and in line with the party's constitution, which clearly outlines the procedures for replacing a member of the National Working Committee.
Anyanwu also accused some governors and members of the Board of Trustees (BoT) of engaging in a proxy war to weaken the party for personal gain. He noted that the advice to swear in Sunday Udeh-Okoye as the substantive National Secretary, following a Court of Appeal judgment, was a thinly veiled attempt to undermine his position.
The PDP has been embroiled in a bitter leadership crisis, with Wike's loyalists pitted against those of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar. Anyanwu and the party's acting national chairman, Umar Damagum, are believed to be sympathetic to Wike's cause, making them targets of relentless attacks from their opponents.
Anyanwu advised those seeking to replace him to wait until the expiration of his tenure in December 2025, when they can contest for the position during the party's national convention. The PDP Governors Forum and the BoT have endorsed Udeh-Okoye as the National Secretary, citing an Enugu Court of Appeal judgment in their decision.
