Nearly a year has passed since the official residence of Nigeria's Vice President, Kashim Shettima, was commissioned by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 7, 2024. Despite the residence being completed at a cost of N21 billion, the Vice President has yet to take up occupancy, according to Politics Nigeria.
The construction of the residence was a long-drawn-out process, with the initial contract awarded 14 years ago. The project's cost escalated significantly over the years, with an initial approval of ₦7 billion in 2010, followed by an additional ₦15 billion sanctioned by the National Assembly in November 2023.
Sources close to the matter have revealed that security concerns are the primary reason for the delay in occupying the residence. The location of the building is reportedly not ideal for a high-profile national public officer like the Vice President, raising concerns about the safety and security of the Vice President and his family. However, these claims have not been officially confirmed.
A recent visit to the residence revealed a deserted scene, with only a few plainclothes security operatives manning the premises. The Federal Capital Development Authority (FCDA) has confirmed that the work components on the Vice President's residence have been completed and handed over to the Presidency.
The delay in occupying the official residence has raised questions about the effectiveness of the government's security arrangements and the priorities of the Vice President. As the situation continues to unfold, it remains to be seen when the Vice President will finally take up occupancy of his official residence.
