The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is grappling with internal conflicts, prompting calls for unity and reconciliation from top party leaders. The rift between Federal Capital Territory Minister, Nyesom Wike, and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, has sparked concerns about the party's prospects in the 2027 elections.
According to Punch Newspaper, Prominent PDP leaders, including National Working Committee and National Executive Committee members, have intervened in the dispute, urging Wike and Mohammed to put aside their differences. National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature, described the feud as "personal" and unrelated to the party's interests.
Meanwhile, opposition governors are scheduled to meet in Asaba to discuss strategies for the 2027 elections. The meeting is seen as an opportunity for the PDP to regroup and present a united front against the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
The party's National Reconciliation Committee, chaired by Senator Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has pledged to resolve the lingering crisis within the PDP. Oyinlola emphasized the need for reconciliation and unity, stating that the party must "re-establish a formidable force" to ensure victory in the next general elections.
The PDP's acting National Chairman, Umar Damagum, has come under fire from some party members, who accuse him of mismanaging the party's affairs. Jerry Omatsogunwa, Special Assistant to Rivers State Governor on Electronic Media, called for Damagum's removal, citing the party's losses under his leadership.
While some party leaders, like Diran Odeyemi, argue that the PDP must take responsibility for its internal conflicts, others, like Timothy Osadolor, blame the APC for fueling the crisis. Osadolor urged Wike and Mohammed to put aside their differences, emphasizing the need for unity in the face of the 2027 elections.
