Arsenal's bid to overturn a 2-0 deficit against Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup semi-finals has been dealt a significant blow, with the news that Gabriel Jesus and Bukayo Saka will miss the second leg due to injury, according to The Shield Gazette.
Jesus, who suffered an ACL injury during Arsenal's match against Manchester United last week, will undergo surgery in the coming days and is expected to miss the remainder of the season.
"Bukayo Saka will also miss the match against Newcastle due to a hamstring injury," an Arsenal club statement confirmed.
Newcastle, meanwhile, will be buoyed by the news that Callum Wilson could return to the squad for the second leg, after more than six weeks on the sidelines with a hamstring injury.
Goalkeeper Nick Pope is also set to return to contention, but Harvey Barnes and Jamaal Lascelles are expected to be ruled out for the match.
The Magpies will be hoping to reach a second Carabao Cup final in three seasons, having been beaten by Manchester United in the 2023 final.
The winners of the tie against Arsenal will face either Liverpool or Tottenham Hotspur in the final, with Spurs taking a 1-0 lead into the second leg at Anfield next month.
Arsenal's busy schedule continues with matches against Dinamo Zagreb, Wolverhampton Wanderers, Girona, and Manchester City before traveling to Newcastle for the second leg.
With the odds stacked against them, Arsenal will need to dig deep to overcome their injury woes and stage a dramatic comeback against Newcastle.
